The Pyte Foundry is an independent type foundry founded in 2015 by Oslo-based designer Ellmer Stefan. Over the course of 2016, the studio released a free display font every week, celebrating the eccentric and imaginative spirit of 19th-century wood type—though not as strict revivals, but as modern reinterpretations. Its retail catalogue features ornate and historical-inspired families such as Compagnie, Kinckq, Pyte Legacy, and Triptych, all blending rough-hewn character with digital craftsmanship. The Pyte Foundry offers bespoke fonts, custom lettering, and typographic consultancy, engaging deeply in historical research and archival exploration to inform its designs—and often works directly with clients on custom commissions. What sets the foundry apart is its “pytographic” ethos: a research-driven, playful, and scholarly process that fuses historical reference, structural oddity, and modern type practices into expressive, idiosyncratic typefaces.
