Public Type is an independent collective and type foundry launched in 2019 by a group of typeface and graphic designers—including Karl Engebretson, Matt Desmond, Stefán Kjartansson, Shiva Nallaperumal, Michael Cina, Lauren Graycar, and Harsh Patel—who share a boundless curiosity for expressive and experimental forms. They maintain a growing retail catalog featuring distinctive typefaces such as Hardcore (inspired by Cold War–era graphic systems), Chrysalis, Cina GEO, Contro, Plakate, Yamantaka, and Stadt. Public Type also offers custom font design for clients of all sizes and contributes to the global type community through workshops, knowledge sharing, and design scholarships. What sets the foundry apart is its collaborative, research-driven model—bringing together diverse voices to craft bold, experimental typographic forms that communicate with energy and intentionality.
