Founding Year

Poem Editions is an independent publishing and type initiative based in Frankfurt am Main, founded by French type designer Jérôme Knebusch under the banner Atelier Jérôme Knebusch. Emerging in the early 2010s from Knebusch’s background in graphic and typographic education, the foundry gained momentum by releasing its Instant sans family in 2012 and later the hybrid historical series Almost Roman and Almost Gothic (2012–2019). Its fonts draw inspiration from the transitional period of 1459–1482—where early roman forms emerged from Gothic origins—earning recognition such as the Type Directors Club’s Certificate of Typographic Excellence in 2020 for Almost. Rather than serving traditional brand clients, Poem Editions focuses on publishing type specimens, pamphlets, and deep typographic research—like its “Poem Collections” bundles and scholarly work on proto-roman models. What uniquely distinguishes Poem Editions is its dedication to typographic historiography: it revives and explores early letterforms through rigorous research and beautifully crafted publications that bridge academic study and contemporary design.
