Plain Form is an independent typographic foundry based in Lyon, founded by Lucas Descroix—officially launched in 2022—as an extension of his graphic and editorial design work. The studio crafts expressive, exploratory font families—such as Grandmaster, Michaux, Nostra, Paraiso, Ready, Disc, and Petit Frère—that blur the line between abstraction and legibility, often inspired by historical letterforms and generative processes. Notable custom commissions include o9 Sans, a fully variable corporate typeface created in 2020 for o9 Solutions and other bespoke designs like the organic Meristem for Vienna-based Calienna. Plain Form’s work is utilised in diverse projects—from magazine typography and album artwork (e.g., Mitski) to exhibitions and corporate branding—showcasing the foundry’s impact across design disciplines. What truly defines Plain Form is its inventive, “mad-scientist” approach to letter design: the studio explores the magical point where form becomes letter, often using algorithms and experimental processes to create fonts that challenge typographic norms while retaining a strong visual identity.
