Occupant Fonts is a type foundry founded by Cyrus Highsmith in 2015, based in Providence, Rhode Island. Specializing in original Latin typefaces, the foundry became the Latin alphabet counterpart to Japanese type company Morisawa in 2017, when Highsmith was appointed Creative Director for Latin Type Development at Morisawa USA. Early collaborations included the release of Citrine and the Latin-character set for A1 Gothic, both stemming from Highsmith’s earlier typeface Allium.
Notable typefaces from Occupant Fonts include Daley’s Gothic, inspired by Highsmith’s mother; Dispatch, an industrial slab serif with a monospaced variant; Magmatic, influenced by Showa-era Japanese type; and Occupant Gothic and Occupant Oldstyle, which reflect Highsmith’s sketching style and Mincho influences respectively. Other acclaimed designs include Prensa, based on W.A. Dwiggins’ Electra, and Quiosco, crafted for narrow text columns.
Highsmith’s work has been used by clients such as The Wall Street Journal, Martha Stewart Living, La Prensa Gráfica, ESPN, and Men’s Health. His typefaces Prensa and Relay earned the 2001 Bukva:raz! award from ATypI, and in 2015, he received the prestigious Gerrit Noordzij Prize for his contributions to type design, typography, and education.
